Cub Run Volleyball Game versus Virginia Run

Come cheer on our sixth grade students and staff during our annual volleyball game as we take on Virginia Run! The game is on Friday, April 4 from 7:00pm-9:00pm at Westfield High School in their gym.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. No child should be dropped off and left unsupervised.

Let’s put on our spirit wear and cheer on our Cubbies!

Principals’ Walking Club

Our next Principals’ Walking Club is on Friday, April 11 from 8:05-8:25 AM in the gym or on the field! Cubbies are invited to come and join Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Haider, and other Cub Run staff to kick off the day with some movement! Our Cubbies will add to their club charms for attending. We hope to see you on April 11!

Our Green Team is working on a special project, and they need your help! As a part of the Westfield Pyramid Challenge, Cub Run is collecting as many plastic bottles as we can, in hopes to build a greenhouse for our school grounds. Green Team members have been hard at work making posters for the school, as well as recording clips for the morning news show to remind students to bring in plastic bottles- but we could use the community's help, too! If you have any plastic water bottles, Gatorade bottles, etc., please send it in with your student(s) to be put into the Green Team's collection stations around the school. Hopefully in the near future, we will have a green house to help our Green Team keep up their awesome gardening work!

Save the Date: Spring 2025 SOLs (gr. 3-6) Positivity Project

This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means enjoying the process of learning new things, whether in school or on your own.

People with a love of learning are motivated because they find joy in learning itself, not just for rewards like grades or prizes. They are driven by the excitement of discovering and mastering new skills.

Developing a love of learning is important for students because it helps them stay motivated and engaged. It can also improve their mental and physical well-being as they take pride in overcoming challenges and growing.

To practice and encourage the character strength of Love of Learning at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is April 14-18. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Monday, April 21. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

Reminders Chronic Absenteeism

For school year 2024-2025, school accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s new Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10%.

As of March 26, Cub Run's chronic absenteeism rate is up to 13.9%.  As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

April - Month of the Military Child

On this day, school staff and students are encouraged to wear purple, symbolizing unity and support for military families across all service branches.

Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

We hope this message finds you having a great week. As we continue through the school year, we could use your help as we review our school's C.A.R.E.S. expectations, particularly regarding restroom use. We've recently experienced an increase in property damage in our restrooms. Our teachers and staff are revisiting our instructional resources which explicitly teach our expectations, and we continue to share messages on our Cubbie Nation News reminding students of these expectations.

Maintaining a safe and respectful environment is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate your partnership in ensuring all of our students understand these expectations.

Our C.A.R.E.S. expectations:

Our Bathroom School-wide Expectations:

  • Make safe choices: This means using safe hands and feet, including keeping our feet on the floor.
  • Go, flush, wash, and leave: Students should use the restroom efficiently and return to class promptly.
  • Keep floors, walls, and stalls clean: We expect students to leave the restroom clean and respect the property.
  • Respect others' privacy: Everyone deserves privacy in the restroom.
  • Report anything broken or missing: If students notice any damage or missing items, they should report it to a staff member immediately.

By reinforcing these expectations, we can ensure that our restrooms remain a clean and safe space for everyone. Thank you for your support in discussing these expectations with your children.

On a different note, I'm thrilled to invite you to our PTA Family Game Night this Friday! It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with other families, have fun, and build our school community. Feel free to bring games and come ready for an evening of laughter and friendly competition. We hope to see you there!

Thank you for your continued partnership in making our school a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Warm Regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Positivity Project

This week, our school community is focused on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when someone else does well, we are happy for them and show our support.

It's normal to sometimes feel jealous or envious when others succeed, but learning to genuinely celebrate their accomplishments can improve our own happiness and relationships. Supporting others not only helps them feel good but also strengthens our community and creates a positive environment.

Encouraging your child to be happy for others can start with simple actions, such as congratulating a friend, noticing feelings of envy and asking why, or learning from others’ successes. These steps build a supportive culture in families, teams, schools, and communities.

To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

Our Cubbies have kicked off the month with Read Across America Week, a SELebration of Reading! It is also National School Social Work Week and we are recognizing our exceptional social worker, Courtney Marques! Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student’s ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. We are extremely fortunate to have Ms. Marques as part of our Cub Run family. We are thankful for all her efforts to support our Cubbies, staff, and families. Please join us in thanking Ms. Marques for all of her contributions to our school community.

Earlier this week, we had our first visit from Rylynn, a certified facility dog working with the Fairfax County Department of Family Services. Rylynn had the opportunity to visit multiple classes in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade and our Cubbies welcomed her with big smiles. We look forward to welcoming Rylynn back again this spring!

Cub Run’s Connect and Learn Night is next week, March 12, from 6:00-7:30pm. We hope you are planning on joining us because our staff have prepared literacy and math activities for all grade levels! You will be able to connect and engage with staff members and other families while you learn about ways to help your child practice a variety of skills at home. We also hope you will stop by our estimation stations, our science fair, social emotional learning resources, and more stations where our Cubbies can use their critical and creative thinking skills. Please see below for additional information and the availability of the Two Smooth Dudes food truck. We are excited to have you join us!

Warm Regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Forgiveness. Forgiveness means letting go of anger toward those who have done wrong and accepting that people make mistakes.

When we forgive, we can move past being hurt and make peace with what happened. Forgiveness heals and strengthens our relationships. It doesn’t erase what happened, but it helps us let go of the hurt and move forward.

Seeking forgiveness shows that a person values relationships and understands the impact of their actions. It shows humility, accountability, and a willingness to make amends. By seeking forgiveness, a person shows they care about resolving conflicts and restoring trust. It also shows emotional maturity and a commitment to personal growth.

To practice and encourage forgiveness at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

As of March 5, Cub Run's chronic absenteeism rate is 12.0%.  As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Perseverance. Perseverance means completing what you start despite obstacles. It means never giving up.

People who show perseverance keep trying, even when they face challenges. They stay focused on their goals and work hard, even when things don't go as planned. Those who persevere often achieve great things because they don't quit. They also learn a lot and get better at what they do.

Perseverance can also inspire others. When one person in a group keeps going despite setbacks, it can motivate the whole team to keep trying and reach their goals.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perseverance at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of Virginia, parents/legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent/guardian, at the parent’s/guardian’s sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

Reminders Upcoming Student Experience Survey

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 24. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, March 3, and Friday, March 7. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Love. Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.

Love is shown through our thoughts, feelings, and actions toward those we care about. When we love someone, we comfort them, make them feel safe, support them during tough times, and often put their needs before our own. When someone loves us, we feel safe and secure and can be ourselves around them. We miss them when they are not around.

Love is important for our community and society. We all depend on each other for happiness and well-being. Love creates positive feelings, helping to reduce loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Without love, we can't form strong bonds with our families, friends, or communities. A world without love would be a lonely and unsafe place.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Learn More About How Your Child Feels at School

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Ramadan

Ramadan begins at sundown on Friday, February 28. This day is an evening-only observance day. There is school on these days, but certain activities that cannot be made up can not take place after school. See the complete school year calendar.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their child’s principal, Mrs. Miller at [email protected] regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28

Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student. To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24. Visit the FNS webpage for more information, including weekly request forms and deadlines.

Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage for guidance on when your child should go to school.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Parents/Guardians have a huge influence on students when it comes to attendance.  Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help students do well in high school, college, and at work.

During the school year...

  • Maintain regular bedtime and morning routines to help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.
  • Talk to your child about why going to school everyday is important unless they are sick.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless they are truly sick.
  • If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him feel comfortable and excited about learning. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
  • Reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you are experiencing tough times such as unstable housing, transportation or health problems.
FCPS’ Construction Projects Offer Community-Wide Benefits

The Fairfax County School Board approved the annual update to FCPS’ FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) at their regular board meeting last week. A CIP is a working budget document that shows the timing and costs of improvement to school buildings, such as renovations, additions, and new schools. Learn more about planned improvements. Fairfax County Public Schools’ updated plans for new school construction, capacity enhancements, and renovations are outlined in the CIP. Projects include constructing two new elementary schools; renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools; and relocation of modular buildings.

Reminders Personal Electronic Devices

As some students returned from break with new devices, we want to send a friendly reminder to review the SR&R Guidelines with your students. In elementary schools, phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Please reach out to our administrative team if you have any questions.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey

Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, between January and April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us prepare and ensure we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Families should prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms on the FCPS kindergarten registration webpage. FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, visit the kindergarten registration webpage.

A strong start is Goal 1 of the 2023-30 Strategic Plan

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.
  2. Identify your local school.
  3. Gather documents.
  4. Fill out forms.
  5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation and any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

💻 Try Online Registration

Online registration for the 2025-26 school year is open for parents/caregivers who would like to enroll their child in FCPS for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process

Positivity Project

This week, our school community is focused on the character strength of Kindness. Kindness means being generous to others, never being too busy to help out, and you enjoy doing good deeds for other people.

Kindness is based on the belief that everyone deserves care, attention, and compassion. Kind people think about others' needs and feelings and take action to help. They are selfless, helping others because it's the right thing to do, not for any personal gain.

People who are kind have a strong sense of duty to care for others. Their acts of kindness inspire more kindness in return.

To practice and encourage the character strength of kindness at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Prudence. Prudence means you plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices.

Prudence is about doing the right thing at the right time for the right reasons. It's a way of thinking ahead, setting goals, making plans, and having the discipline to follow through. It’s more about using your head than your heart.

Prudence helps with managing yourself effectively. Whether aiming for a sports record, getting good grades, or saving for something special, you need to plan ahead and stay focused. Even with a plan, you must resist temptations that might distract you. Prudence gives you the wisdom to use the right strengths at the right time to achieve your goals.

To practice and encourage the character strength of prudence at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. VSBA School Board Appreciation Month

Thank you to the Fairfax County School Board for all they do throughout the year. Want to contact your school board representatives to share your appreciation? Visit their website to find your school board member and contact them.

President's Day (Holiday)

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 17, for the Presidents Day holiday. See the complete school year calendar.

Reminders Elementary School Language Arts Progress Reports

As we shared earlier this year, our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. Students are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the year. By monitoring grades in each standard the whole school year, you can get a clearer picture of areas where they need to grow most, as well as their overall progress in literacy. The goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report, it might continue to look different, especially in the area of language arts. Your child is continuing to be assessed on end of the year standards with our new language arts curriculum. The second quarter progress report will be reflective of their current progress at this time of the year. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Famililes and Friends,

As the second quarter of the school year comes to a close, we want to express our sincere gratitude to our entire school community – students, families, teachers, and staff – for their hard work, dedication, and positive contributions. This quarter has been filled with many highlights including connecting with our community during our Veterans Day assemblies, Thanksgiving Lunch, Literacy Information Session, Family Game Night, and Bingo Night! Our Cubbies have been focused on our C.A.R.E.S. expectations-they have earned pieing us in the face, stuffed animal day, Gratitude Graffiti Lunch, and they are close to achieving the opportunity to silly string us and our teachers and staff at our upcoming C.A.R.E.S. assemblies in February!

We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made this quarter. Their enthusiasm for learning, coupled with the unwavering support of our dedicated educators, has created a vibrant and enriching learning environment. As we move to the third quarter, we are excited to come together as a school community for our C.A.R.E.S. assemblies to reinforce our school-wide expectations, to host our spelling bee, Kindness Week, our Military Family Potluck, and our Connect and Learn Night in March-please see below for more information.

We look forward to another successful quarter filled with learning, growth, and community engagement.

Warm Regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

SCA Spirit Day: Career Day Westfield Pyramid Kindness Week Principals’ Walking Club

Our next Principals’ Walking Club is on Friday, February 14 from 8:05-8:25 AM in the gym! Cubbies are invited to come and join Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Haider, and other Cub Run staff to kick off the day with some movement. We hope to see you on February 14!

Cub Run Connect & Learn Night!

Please join us on March 12th from 6:00-7:30 pm for Cub Run’s Connect and Learn Night! In addition to the PTA-sponsored Science Fair, you are invited to connect and engage with other families while you learn about ways to help your child practice a variety of skills at home in math, language arts, and social-emotional wellness. We will also have interactive stations where students can “show that they know” as they make estimations and use their critical and creative thinking skills. We hope to see you there!

Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence means understanding other people's thoughts and feelings and why they act the way they do.

Social intelligence helps us build good relationships by being aware of others’ emotions and behaviors. It is different from "book smarts" and grows with experience. It also allows people to connect, form friendships, and protect themselves from being taken advantage of. It also helps us read facial expressions and understand what motivates others.

To practice and encourage the character strength of social intelligence at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

FCPS’ Proposed Construction Projects Offer Community-Wide Benefits

Fairfax County Public Schools’ updated plans for new school construction, capacity enhancements, and renovations are outlined in the proposed FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Projects include constructing two new elementary schools; renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools; and relocation of modular buildings.

The proposed CIP was presented to the School Board at the January 14 work session. A public hearing was also held January 14. The School Board will take action on the proposed CIP at its Thursday, February 6 meeting.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Arrival & Dismissal Safety Reminders

Sully Station Drive & Bus Loop

We are seeing an increase again in unsafe actions on Sully Station Drive and our bus loop during our arrival and dismissal procedures. If you are dropping your student(s) off in the morning or picking up at dismissal, please utilize our Kiss and Ride/Car Rider line to safely drop off or pick up students. If you are parking and walking, please park near our crosswalk and utilize the crosswalk that is supported by our amazing crossing guard and use our sidewalks to walk to door 4.

Unfortunately, we are seeing students walk/run across Sully Station Drive where there is no crosswalk and we are concerned about our students and families. There is also a safety concern when parking along Sully Station Drive and walking through our bus loop. Please utilize sidewalks because our buses are arriving or departing with our students.

Kiss and Ride Loop (Car Riders)

If you are accessing our kiss and ride loop to drop off or pick up students, please remain in your vehicles and ensure you are dropping off students where we have staff and patrols. If you arrive after 8:40am, you will need to park and walk our students to the main office to check-in. At 8:40am, our staff need to report to their positions to support students in the building.

If you are walking students to door 4, we request that you do not park in the lot and then walk across the parking lot. Cars are making their way around the loop and we want to ensure that our Cubbies do not walk out in front of a car.

Thank you for your partnership in utilizing our procedures to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal for our school community.

Westfield Pyramid Kindness Week Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Self-Control. Self-control means having the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act.

Having self-control helps people stay calm during tough times and avoid impulsive actions. It doesn’t mean you don’t have thoughts or feelings; it means you can manage them.

When working or gathering in groups, self-control is shown through “self-monitoring.” This means being honest about what works and what doesn’t. Group members adjust their roles to help the group succeed.

To practice and encourage the character strength of self-control at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

The echoes of laughter and footsteps in our halls tell the most joyful story of our Cubbies being back in the building! Our annual PTA Bingo Night is on Friday evening and we are excited to come together for this outstanding event. We hope to see you there!

Warm Regards,

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might continue to look different, especially in the area of language arts. Your child is continuing to be assessed on end of the year standards with our new language arts curriculum. The second quarter progress report will be reflective of their current progress at this time of the year. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.

To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

January is National Mentoring Month

Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are.Learn more about Mentoring Month.

Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor.

All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.

The FCPS MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work. They meet for at least 30 minutes a week. Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student. Contact Martha Macdonald, mentoring specialist, for additional information at [email protected]

ST Family Math Week

Come together as a community for students in K-8 for 5 nights the week of January 13, 2025, with delightful math games and stories - all on your own time and from the comfort of your own home. All content will be available for free directly to all families in English and Spanish.

Through rich story-based mathematics experiences, math week offers families  an opportunity to experience  math, literacy, history, and geography in a positive way. The games and stories feature several countries including Lesotho, Madagascar, Ghana, and China.

All content will be available completely free on the website starting January 13, 2025. To access the games, families will be able to simply click on the day of the week and find their child's grade and language. View the website at anytime for explanations and videos.

Families can play for as little as 15 minutes or replay over and over lasting more than an hour on any given night. For families that want to reduce screen time, we will have physical print options for access to the content and games as well.

Use the games and stories on our website or dust off your favorite math game and play it as a family.

Any and ALL math experiences outside of a normal week count. Our goal is for FCPS to experience 1,000,000 minutes of math outside of the school day. Join us!

Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed the winter break and that our Cubbies are having fun on the snow days to kick off 2025. We look forward to hearing about their snowy adventures as soon as we return to school!

Our custodial team has been hard at work clearing our sidewalks and parking lots in preparation for our Cubbies and staff to safely return. We are grateful for their efforts to keep our school clean and safe.

As we turn the page to this new year, we hope each of our Cubbies have a year filled with success and joy. So, let’s hold onto this energy, let’s be fearless in our learning, kind in our interactions, and unwavering in our belief in each other. Together, we can make this year something truly extraordinary.

With warmest wishes,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Westfield Pyramid Kindness Shirts

Westfield Pyramid Schools are committed to promoting kindness, empathy, and inclusion. Schools will celebrate Kindness Week in February and we invite all students and staff in the Westfield Pyramid to wear their “We Choose Kindness” shirts signifying a personal commitment to choosing kindness.

We are offering short-sleeve shirts and hooded sweatshirts in black with white and pink ink. Why pink? The color is based on an anti-bullying campaign started by Travis Price and David Shepherd, who took a stand for a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.

Orders are due by January 15th and items will be delivered to your child’s classroom. If you would like to purchase, please scan the QR code to order online via the PTA Store, click the link below to get a PDF version of the paper form, or wait for a paper form to come home with your student(s) once we return to school.

Return paper forms to Kristen Buesing (School Counselor) with any checks made out to Cub Run PTA. We will not be accepting any payment after January 15th.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Optimism. Optimism means that you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.

Optimistic people have hope and confidence about the future. They believe good things will come and stay positive even when faced with challenges. They turn obstacles into steps toward their goals.

Optimism isn't just seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. It's about focusing on the good in any situation, staying open to opportunities, and managing emotions. Optimistic people make great leaders and can inspire others with their positive outlook and ability to find meaning in difficult times.

To practice and encourage the character strength of optimism at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Students, Families and Friends,

Winter break is almost here, and we couldn't be more excited for our entire school community to dive into a season of joy, rest, and rejuvenation.

This year, as we learn, grow, and explore together, our students have filled our classrooms with laughter, creativity, and a thirst for knowledge. From our youngest Cubbies in preschool to our sixth graders, every one of you has brought something special to our school family.

Remember, even though the school doors are closed, the spirit of learning and community never sleeps. Read a book under the twinkling lights, build a fort of pillows and blankets, or try a new recipe with your family. Every moment is a chance to explore, create, and connect.

And when the new year arrives, come back to us refreshed, recharged, and ready to fill our classrooms with even more wonder and excitement. We can't wait to see you all again!

Until then, have a safe, healthy, and truly magical winter break! We look forward to welcoming our Cubbies and families back in the new year!

Warmly,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Student and Family Resources

Fairfax County Public Schools has compiled a list of resources for students and families in case they need assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources webpage for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

School’s Closed, Learning Can Continue!

FCPS encourages students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during winter break and snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play for your students during winter break or weather-related school closures.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

Christmas

A very Merry Christmas to those in our community who celebrate! Christmas is an annual holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the person who stands at the heart of the Christian tradition. It is celebrated in many unique ways across the U.S. and the world, most commonly by the joyous giving of gifts. Learn more about Christmas.

Chanukah

Chanukah, an 8-day Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of a small quantity of oil that lit the Temple’s menorah for 8 days. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown on Wednesday, December 25. See the complete school year calendar.

Winter Break

As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 23, to Friday, January 3. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year. Classes resume on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. See the complete school year calendar.

Reminder: Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART)  Naomi Egerton Baker  no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART)  Naomi Egerton Baker at [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

⏰ Update on Potential Changes to Middle School Start Times

At Tuesday’s School Board work session, staff from Prismatic Services, Inc., presented options for adjusting start times at FCPS middle schools. As a reminder, Prismatic is charged with developing an action plan to help the School Board reach its goal of starting middle school at or after 8 a.m.

The presentation includes five options for adjusting middle school start times based on the consultant’s analysis from community forums, surveys, and interviews with staff, parents, associations, and other groups. The School Board will provide next steps to the superintendent.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.
