Cubbie NewsDear Cub Run Families and Friends,
The echoes of laughter and footsteps in our halls tell the most joyful story of our Cubbies being back in the building! Our students were excited to return to school, share their adventures, and to be reunited with teachers and friends. Our exceptional teachers have already set the stage for growth and discovery by igniting our students’ curiosity through positive and engaging learning experiences.
We are also looking forward to this Friday for our first Principals' Walking Club of 2025! Due to the weather, we will be in the gym and hope that many of our Cubbies can join us. Our annual PTA Bingo Night is on Friday evening and we are excited to come together for this outstanding event. We hope to see you there!
Warm Regards,
Melissa Miller, Principal
Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal
Westfield Pyramid Outstanding Employee WinnersWe are beyond excited to share that two of our staff members have been selected and recognized as the Westfield Pyramid winners for our FCPS Outstanding Employee awards. They will represent the Westfield Pyramid in the Region 5 award selection process.
Westfield Pyramid Outstanding Teacher: Stephanie McWhirt, Cub Run First Grade Teacher
Westfield Pyramid Outstanding Professional Employee: Madina Niaz Smith, Technology Support Specialist for Cub Run & Virginia Run Elementary Schools
We are thrilled that they are being recognized for their hard work, dedication, and positive impact on our school community! Please help us congratulate them!
Westfield Pyramid Kindness Shirts- Last Day to Order!Westfield Pyramid Schools are committed to promoting kindness, empathy, and inclusion. Schools will celebrate Kindness Week in February and we invite all students and staff in the Westfield Pyramid to wear their “We Choose Kindness” shirts signifying a personal commitment to choosing kindness. We are offering short-sleeve shirts and hooded sweatshirts in black with white and pink ink. Why pink? The color is based on an anti-bullying campaign started by Travis Price and David Shepherd, who took a stand for a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.
Orders are due by today and items will be delivered to your child’s classroom. If you would like to purchase, please scan the QR code below to order online via the PTA Store. We will not be accepting any payment after January 15th.
Principals’ Walking ClubOur first Principals’ Walking Club of 2025 is on Friday, January 17 from 8:05-8:25 AM in the gym! Cubbies are invited to come and join Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Haider, and other Cub Run staff to kick off the day with some movement! Our Cubbies will add to their club charm for attending. We hope to see you on January 17!
Calendar Reminders Martin Luther King Jr. Day/Inauguration (Holiday)Schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday and the Presidential Inauguration.
FCPS is collaborating with Volunteer Fairfax for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Students and families can volunteer on Saturday, January 25, at Give Together at the James Lee Community Center.
Volunteer Fairfax invites families to participate in thoughtful, engaging service projects working alongside local nonprofit and government agency partners across a variety of mission areas. Projects will include food packing, creating care packages, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required.
There will also be Financial Literacy Workshops offered at Give Together for students in grades 3-12. If you would like to attend one of the workshops, sign up during check-in on January 25.
Quarter End/Lunar New Year/Teacher WorkdayTuesday, January 28, is the last day of the second quarter. Wednesday, January 29, is Lunar New Year and a teacher workday. There will be no school for students. See the complete school year calendar.
Reminder: Elementary School Language Arts Progress ReportsAs we shared earlier this year, our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).
Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. Students are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the year. By monitoring grades in each standard the whole school year, you can get a clearer picture of areas where they need to grow most, as well as their overall progress in literacy. The goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.
This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might continue to look different, especially in the area of language arts. Your child is continuing to be assessed on end of the year standards with our new language arts curriculum. The second quarter progress report will be reflective of their current progress at this time of the year. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.
Positivity ProjectThis week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.
Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.
To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!

January is National Mentoring Month
Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are.Learn more about Mentoring Month.
Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor.
All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.
The FCPS MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work. They meet for at least 30 minutes a week. Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student. Contact Martha Macdonald, mentoring specialist, for additional information at [email protected].
ST Family Math Week
Come together as a community for students in K-8 for 5 nights the week of January 13, 2025, with delightful math games and stories - all on your own time and from the comfort of your own home. All content will be available for free directly to all families in English and Spanish.
Through rich story-based mathematics experiences, math week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a positive way. The games and stories feature several countries including Lesotho, Madagascar, Ghana, and China.
All content will be available completely free on the website starting January 13, 2025. To access the games, families will be able to simply click on the day of the week and find their child's grade and language. View the website at anytime for explanations and videos.
Families can play for as little as 15 minutes or replay over and over lasting more than an hour on any given night. For families that want to reduce screen time, we will have physical print options for access to the content and games as well.
Use the games and stories on our website or dust off your favorite math game and play it as a family.
Any and ALL math experiences outside of a normal week count. Our goal is for FCPS to experience 1,000,000 minutes of math outside of the school day. Join us!
