Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

The echoes of laughter and footsteps in our halls tell the most joyful story of our Cubbies being back in the building! Our students were excited to return to school, share their adventures, and to be reunited with teachers and friends. Our exceptional teachers have already set the stage for growth and discovery by igniting our students’ curiosity through positive and engaging learning experiences.

We are also looking forward to this Friday for our first Principals' Walking Club of 2025! Due to the weather, we will be in the gym and hope that many of our Cubbies can join us. Our annual PTA Bingo Night is on Friday evening and we are excited to come together for this outstanding event. We hope to see you there!

Warm Regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Calendar Reminders Martin Luther King Jr. Day/Inauguration (Holiday)

Schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday and the Presidential Inauguration.

FCPS is collaborating with Volunteer Fairfax for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Students and families can volunteer on Saturday, January 25, at Give Together at the James Lee Community Center.

Volunteer Fairfax invites families to participate in thoughtful, engaging service projects working alongside local nonprofit and government agency partners across a variety of mission areas. Projects will include food packing, creating care packages, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required.

There will also be Financial Literacy Workshops offered at Give Together for students in grades 3-12. If you would like to attend one of the workshops, sign up during check-in on January 25.

Quarter End/Lunar New Year/Teacher Workday

Tuesday, January 28, is the last day of the second quarter. Wednesday, January 29, is Lunar New Year and a teacher workday. There will be no school for students. See the complete school year calendar.

Reminder: Elementary School Language Arts Progress Reports

As we shared earlier this year, our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. Students are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the year. By monitoring grades in each standard the whole school year, you can get a clearer picture of areas where they need to grow most, as well as their overall progress in literacy. The goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might continue to look different, especially in the area of language arts. Your child is continuing to be assessed on end of the year standards with our new language arts curriculum. The second quarter progress report will be reflective of their current progress at this time of the year. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.

To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

January is National Mentoring Month

Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are.Learn more about Mentoring Month.

Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor.

All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.

The FCPS MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work. They meet for at least 30 minutes a week. Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student. Contact Martha Macdonald, mentoring specialist, for additional information at [email protected]

ST Family Math Week

Come together as a community for students in K-8 for 5 nights the week of January 13, 2025, with delightful math games and stories - all on your own time and from the comfort of your own home. All content will be available for free directly to all families in English and Spanish.

Through rich story-based mathematics experiences, math week offers families  an opportunity to experience  math, literacy, history, and geography in a positive way. The games and stories feature several countries including Lesotho, Madagascar, Ghana, and China.

All content will be available completely free on the website starting January 13, 2025. To access the games, families will be able to simply click on the day of the week and find their child's grade and language. View the website at anytime for explanations and videos.

Families can play for as little as 15 minutes or replay over and over lasting more than an hour on any given night. For families that want to reduce screen time, we will have physical print options for access to the content and games as well.

Use the games and stories on our website or dust off your favorite math game and play it as a family.

Any and ALL math experiences outside of a normal week count. Our goal is for FCPS to experience 1,000,000 minutes of math outside of the school day. Join us!

Our custodial team has been hard at work clearing our sidewalks and parking lots in preparation for our Cubbies and staff to safely return. We are grateful for their efforts to keep our school clean and safe.

As we turn the page to this new year, we hope each of our Cubbies have a year filled with success and joy. So, let’s hold onto this energy, let’s be fearless in our learning, kind in our interactions, and unwavering in our belief in each other. Together, we can make this year something truly extraordinary.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Optimism. Optimism means that you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.

Optimistic people have hope and confidence about the future. They believe good things will come and stay positive even when faced with challenges. They turn obstacles into steps toward their goals.

Optimism isn't just seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. It's about focusing on the good in any situation, staying open to opportunities, and managing emotions. Optimistic people make great leaders and can inspire others with their positive outlook and ability to find meaning in difficult times.

To practice and encourage the character strength of optimism at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Students, Families and Friends,

Winter break is almost here, and we couldn't be more excited for our entire school community to dive into a season of joy, rest, and rejuvenation.

This year, as we learn, grow, and explore together, our students have filled our classrooms with laughter, creativity, and a thirst for knowledge. From our youngest Cubbies in preschool to our sixth graders, every one of you has brought something special to our school family.

Remember, even though the school doors are closed, the spirit of learning and community never sleeps. Read a book under the twinkling lights, build a fort of pillows and blankets, or try a new recipe with your family. Every moment is a chance to explore, create, and connect.

And when the new year arrives, come back to us refreshed, recharged, and ready to fill our classrooms with even more wonder and excitement. We can't wait to see you all again!

Until then, have a safe, healthy, and truly magical winter break! We look forward to welcoming our Cubbies and families back in the new year!

Warmly,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Positivity Project

This week, our school continues to focus on the character strength of Gratitude. Gratitude means being aware of and grateful for good things that happen.

Gratitude is about feeling and showing thankfulness. It helps us see the good in others and in the world. People with gratitude are ready to appreciate and return kindness. Expert Robert Emmons says gratitude strengthens relationships because it makes us recognize how others support us.

Out of all 24 character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is linked to more energy, empathy, happiness, and optimism. The good news is that gratitude can be practiced and strengthened like a muscle. The more we practice it, the more benefits we get.

To practice and encourage this strength at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Student and Family Resources

Fairfax County Public Schools has compiled a list of resources for students and families in case they need assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources webpage for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

School’s Closed, Learning Can Continue!

FCPS encourages students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during winter break and snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play for your students during winter break or weather-related school closures.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

Christmas

A very Merry Christmas to those in our community who celebrate! Christmas is an annual holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the person who stands at the heart of the Christian tradition. It is celebrated in many unique ways across the U.S. and the world, most commonly by the joyous giving of gifts. Learn more about Christmas.

Chanukah

Chanukah, an 8-day Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of a small quantity of oil that lit the Temple’s menorah for 8 days. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown on Wednesday, December 25. See the complete school year calendar.

Winter Break

As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 23, to Friday, January 3. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year. Classes resume on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. See the complete school year calendar.

Reminders Safety Reminder for Arrival & Dismissal

We are seeing an increase again in unsafe actions on Sully Station Drive and our bus loop during our arrival and dismissal procedures. If you are dropping your student(s) off in the morning or picking up at dismissal, please utilize our Kiss and Ride/Car Rider line to safely drop off or pick up students. When dropping off at Kiss and Ride, please remain in your cars so all students can exit their vehicles safely and in a timely manner. If you are parking and walking, please park near our crosswalk and utilize the crosswalk that is supported by our amazing crossing guard and use our sidewalks to walk to door 4.

Unfortunately, we are seeing students walk/run across Sully Station Drive where there is no crosswalk and we are concerned about our students and families. There is also a safety concern when parking along Sully Station Drive and walking through our bus loop. Please utilize sidewalks because our buses are arriving or departing with our students.

If students arrive after 8:40am, please walk them into door 1 to be checked in at the main office.

Thank you for your partnership in utilizing our procedures to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal for our school community.

Please help us appreciate our exceptional staff this winter season as we celebrate 10 days of winter cheer! We are grateful for any support. Please review the available slots here and click on the button to sign up. The items can be dropped off in the main office or brought in by your student prior to the date on the specific item. If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Melissa, principal. Thank you for helping us spread some winter cheer throughout the halls of Cub Run!

Safety Reminder for Arrival & Dismissal

We are seeing an increase again in unsafe actions on Sully Station Drive and our bus loop during our arrival and dismissal procedures. If you are dropping your student(s) off in the morning or picking up at dismissal, please utilize our Kiss and Ride/Car Rider line to safely drop off or pick up students.

Thank you for your partnership in utilizing our procedures to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal for our school community.

Reminder: Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART)  Naomi Egerton Baker  no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART)  Naomi Egerton Baker at [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Positivity Project

This week and next week, our school is focused on the character strength of Gratitude.

FCPS News Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us.

Register for ParentVUELearn how to activate your ParentVUE account, so you can easily access your child’s results and other helpful information.

National Special Education Day was December 2

National Special Education Day is recognized each year on Dec. 2 and commemorates President Gerald Ford’s signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975. We celebrate our teachers and staff who serve and support our students receiving special education services, as well as our families who are partners in the education and support of those students!

Bodhi Day is Sunday, December 8

Bodhi day is the Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni), experienced enlightenment, also known as bodhi in Sanskrit and Pali.

Special Education Resources for Families

Fairfax County Public Schools has the following resources available to help assist families of students with special needs.

  • The Office of Special Education Procedural Support helps staff, families, and students with the implementation of and compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended.

Additionally, the Virginia Department of Education has updated the Virginia Family's Guide to Special Education. This state guide was developed to help those involved in special education including families, teachers, school administrators, advocates, and  students.

Reminders Handwashing

It's important to remind our children about the importance of practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. These simple practices can significantly reduce the spread of germs, particularly during the winter season when gatherings and travel increase.

Key Reminders:

  • Wash Hands Frequently: Encourage students to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water are not readily available, provide access to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content.
  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Remind students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly in a wastebasket and wash their hands.
  • Avoid Touching Face: Discourage students from touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

PTA Family Game Night Positivity Project

This week, our school is focused on the character strength of Creativity. Creativity means coming up with new and original ways to think about and do things.

Creative people see the world differently. They are open to new experiences and think independently. They come up with many ideas and pursue them with energy and enthusiasm. Creativity takes courage because sharing original ideas can sometimes lead to criticism.

Creativity is vital to our world! Creative solutions can help resolve conflicts and find compromises that satisfy everyone involved, strengthening relationships. It helps us solve tough problems, create new things, and see the world in fresh ways. Examples include treatments for deadly illnesses, such as cancer, the invention of the cell phone, and the development of solar panels. Imagine life without Impressionist paintings or the creation of airplanes and rocket ships.

To encourage creativity with your child at home, visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

  • Photography Club- New cameras will be purchased for the photography club.  This club is responsible for a majority of the images included in the school yearbook.
FCPS News National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

If you have questions or would like more information, ask your school office to connect you with your family liaison or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives

Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

Positivity Project

Next week, our school will focus on the character strength of Creativity.

Reminders Safety Reminder for Arrival & Dismissal

We are seeing an increase in unsafe actions on Sully Station Drive and our bus loop during our arrival and dismissal procedures. If you are dropping your student(s) off in the morning or picking up at dismissal, please utilize our Kiss and Ride/Car Rider line to safely drop off or pick up students.

Thank you for your partnership in utilizing our procedures to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal for our school community.

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers!

While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Changes to Progress Reports

Starting in November 2024, your child’s progress report grades may look different due to the changes below.

  • Before: the FCPS Planning and Pacing Guide covered different standards each quarter.
  • Current: FCPS now uses Benchmark Advance. It covers all standards each quarter, building towards mastery. Fewer standards will be marked Not Taught (NT) or Not Assessed (NA)

Schools will still use the same 4-point scale to assign grades; please refer to the https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-reporting/elementary-school/elementary-grading-and-reporting-handbook-parents for more details.

Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

As we wrap up the first quarter of the school year, we want to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for your continued support and partnership. It has been a fantastic start to the year, filled with learning, growth, and community building.

Our students have demonstrated remarkable dedication and perseverance, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. They have embraced our C.A.R.E.S. expectations and have been earning C.A.R.E.S. tickets for their positive behaviors. We encourage all students to continue striving for excellence and embodying our school's core values.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff members who work tirelessly to create a positive and engaging learning environment for our students. Their commitment to our students' success is truly inspiring.

We hope that all families have taken the opportunity to sign up for first quarter conferences. These conferences are a valuable chance to connect with your child's teacher and discuss their progress. As we move forward into the second quarter, we remain committed to providing our students with the highest quality education and fostering a strong sense of community. Together, we can continue to achieve great things.

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Safety Reminder for Arrival & Dismissal

We’ve noticed a rise in unsafe behaviors on Sully Station Drive and in our bus loop during arrival and dismissal times. To help ensure the safety of all students, please use the Kiss and Ride/Car Rider line when dropping off or picking up your child.

If you’re parking and walking, kindly use the designated parking areas near the crosswalk and cross at the marked crosswalk where our dedicated crossing guard is present.

We’re also concerned about students crossing Sully Station Dr. at points without crosswalks. It’s crucial for everyone’s safety that we avoid parking along Sully Station Drive and walking through the bus loop, as buses are frequently coming and going with students.

We understand that it may be inconvenient to walk to the crosswalk, but not doing so puts our students at risk. Please discuss the importance of crosswalk safety with your child and encourage them to always use the sidewalks as they make their way to Door 4.

Thank you for your cooperation in following these procedures to help keep our school community safe.

Calendar Reminders

Thursday, October 31, is the last day of the first quarter, and a two-hour early release for students. Dismissal is at 1:25pm.

Friday, November 1, is a holiday this year for Diwali and All Saints Day & Dia de los Muertos. All schools and offices will be closed.

We wish a fun Diwali to all celebrating! Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. #OurFCPS.

This week we recognize those in our community observing All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos. For Catholics, All Saints Day (November 1) celebrates all those who are with God in Heaven, known and unknown. All Souls Day (November 2), known in Mexico and Latin America as Día de los Muertos, is a day of remembrance and prayer for all those who have died, especially for the souls who may be in purgatory. These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world. #OurFCPS

Sunday, November 3, at 2 a.m., Daylight saving time will end. Don’t forget to move your clocks back one hour!

Monday, November 4, is a school planning day, no school for students.

Tuesday, November 5, is a teacher workday, no school for students.

Cub Run Storywalk

Thank you to our own first grade teacher Mrs. Cousino (and her awesome husband and son) for spending their time and energy to bring our Cubbies a story walk!

We are excited to announce that our new Cub Run Storywalk is open and available to our Cubbies and families! Please come out behind our playground and check out our current book, Lost, by David McPhail.

Positivity Project

This week, our school will focus on the character strength of Integrity. Integrity means being honest, truthful, and genuine.

Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. People with integrity tell the truth and align their thoughts, feelings, and actions. They have the courage to stick to their beliefs, even if it means not following the crowd. Integrity is closely related to honesty and authenticity.

Integrity is essential for personal growth and well-being. When your thoughts, feelings, and actions are in harmony, you can grow and achieve your goals. Being authentic and genuine makes you more likable and trusted by others, improving your relationships.

To practice and encourage the character strength of integrity at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Our Cub-Run-read-a-thon was a success!  Three rotating centers had our Cubbies in the gym, library and outdoors.  The gym was full of running, jumping, and rolling through obstacle courses.  The library was quiet while eyes and imaginations were busy absorbing stories.  And outdoors, as you can see, was full of smiles and conversation as students were treated to snow cones!

What better way to kick off the first day of our Cub Run C.A.R.E.S & Digital Citizenship spirit week than coming into school wearing comfy pjs and Cubbie spirit wear?!

Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

We have had an outstanding week at Cub Run! We want to thank all of our volunteers and families who supported our Cub Run & Read-a-thon! Our Cubbies had a blast raising funds for our school as they worked their way through the obstacle course or continued reading in our library. Of course, they also loved to celebrate with our snow cones! We are grateful for everyone who was able to help and are thankful for the support of our families and PTA.

It has been exciting to see our Cubbies participating in our spirit week as we continue to focus on our C.A.R.E.S. expectations and digital citizenship. Each day this week, we have been reinforcing our expectations and continue to explicitly instruct our students on what this looks like in each of our learning environments and online.

Our next early release is on Monday, October 28. All students who attend afternoon SACC will be dismissed at 12:25 to SACC. If there is a change in your child's after-school plans for the early release, please complete this updated form no later than Thursday, October 24. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure we know how our dismissal plans for each of our Cubbies.

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the Other People Mindset of Being present and giving others my attention. This means when we are with other people, we are present and give them our full attention.

In today's world, it's easy to get distracted by phone calls, messages, and social media. These distractions can pull us away from what's most important — our relationships with other people.

Just as plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. If we don’t give our full attention when we are with our family, friends, and even colleagues, we can't build strong relationships. It’s crucial to put down our phones and tablets and really listen when others are talking. Positive relationships are the foundation of a positive culture, and we can’t build positive relationships without attention.

To practice and encourage the Other People Mindset of being present and giving others our attention, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families. There, you will watch a video clip together and discuss a quote and three questions.

Thank you for your support!

Cub Run C.A.R.E.S.

We encourage you to ask your student about what C.A.R.E.S. means and what it looks like in our hallways, bathrooms, at recess, and in our cafeteria. We appreciate your partnership and support in fostering a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for all of our Cubbies.

A little fun for everyone! Did someone say "pie"?

One student from each grade level was pulled from our C.A.R.E.S. ticket bin for the "Pie the Principal" incentive. Students received 2024 tickets overall, surpassing the goal of 2000. The event was recorded and shared during a Cubbie Nation News edition for all students to enjoy.

Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

We wanted to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude to our amazing students, families, and staff for continuing to partner together to support our school community.

Our Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day was a great success, and we were thrilled to see many of our students and their families participating. It's a wonderful way to promote healthy living and environmental awareness. Additionally, our Principal's Walking Club kicked off last week, providing students with an opportunity to start the morning with movement and connecting with our staff and other students. We hope to see even more Cubbies next month!

Our Cubbies have continued to earn our C.A.R.E.S. tickets and achieved the goal of pieing us in the face. Students from each grade level were able to pie us in the face! Way to go, Cubbies! The current goal our students are working towards is 2,250 tickets for a school-wide stuffed animal day. Next week is our C.A.R.E.S & Digital Citizenship Spirit Week, please see below for more information.

As we look ahead to Friday, we are excited for our Cub Run and Read-a-thon. Thank you to all our families and community members who have registered and donated. Your support is invaluable. We are grateful to our PTA for their continued dedication to our school community. We know it is going to be an awesome day!

Thank you again for your ongoing support. We look forward to another fantastic week ahead!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

As we continue to focus on the safety of our students, staff and families, we want to remind families who are picking up their children at door 4 as walkers, to park off of school grounds and not in our parking lot where our kiss and ride/car riders are moving through.

We have had several unsafe situations where students have been crossing the parking lot and cars are frequently moving through the parking lot.

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Open-Mindedness. This means being willing to consider new ideas and try new things. It involves looking at situations from all sides and not jumping to conclusions.

Open-mindedness is about seeking out and fairly weighing evidence, even if it goes against our own opinions or goals. Open-minded people listen to different viewpoints, including those that are less popular. They are often good listeners and provide balanced advice, which makes them great friends and confidants. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.

To practice and encourage the character strength of open-mindedness at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you will watch a video clip together and discuss a quote and three questions related to open-mindedness.

Thank you for your support!

Cub Run C.A.R.E.S. & Digital Citizenship Spirit Week To Honor Our Veterans- November 8

We are excited to be planning our Veterans Day assemblies for our students! We would like to put together a slide show highlighting Veterans in our Cub Run community. If you or a member of your family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc) have served in any branch of the Armed Forces, please send a photo to be included in the slide show so that we can recognize and appreciate the sacrifices that they have made for our country. All pictures can be emailed to Tracy Cousino at [email protected].

We are also planning a few other events leading up to Veterans Day and would like to invite any Veterans who would like to read a story to a class/grade level during the week of November 6-8.

If you are interested or know someone who would be interested, please email Tracy Cousino ([email protected]) with your availability on the November 6th-8th. Please also include the grade level/class of your Cub Run student (if you have one) so that we can best match up readers with classes.

Save the Date for Our Thanksgiving Lunch!

We are looking forward to hosting our families for our annual Thanksgiving Lunch on Thursday, November 21! Please save the date and stay tuned for additional details.

Positivity Project

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Teamwork. Teamwork means you work well as a member of a group or team. You are loyal, reliable, and dedicated to helping your team achieve its goals.

Teamwork involves prioritizing group success. Those strong in teamwork help all group members succeed, committing time and resources to the group's goals. They often delay personal accomplishments to ensure the group's overall success, which fosters positive feelings and counters selfishness and egotism.

For individuals, teamwork often means deferring or delaying individual accomplishments in order to ensure that the group maintains a high level of success. Their commitment to the larger group effort makes them good teammates. The positive feelings associated with being part of a larger whole — can be highly beneficial and combat selfishness and egotism.

To practice and encourage the character strength of teamwork at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you will watch a video clip together and discuss a quote and three questions related to teamwork.

Thank you for your continued support!

Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact an administrator or school counselor.

FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan - Goal 4: Equitable Access to Opportunities

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

The fourth goal ensures all students have the same access to opportunities, no matter what school they attend. This includes academics and other programs that inspire and engage students and allow them to explore their passions and talents. See how Goal 4 is being put into practice

Gun Safety and Safe Gun Storage

Providing students and staff with a safe educational environment remains our priority. Sadly, gun violence continues to impact schools and communities across our nation.

In FCPS, lessons on gun safety are built into our curriculum. It is critical that parents and guardians talk to their children about the importance of gun safety and safe gun storage in their homes, and in any home they may visit.

The FCPS website has gun safety resources as well as information about safety and security practices at schools. See Dr. Reid’s recent letter to the community for more resources.

Safely Store Firearms and Medications

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board has a limited supply of free locking medication boxes and trigger locks that fit a wide variety of firearms. Visit the Lock and Talk website to learn more.
