Cub Run News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

This week, we celebrate the incredible individuals who truly make an impact: our amazing staff! Every day, we are inspired by the dedication, creativity, and unwavering support of our teachers and staff. They go above and beyond to nurture the academic, social, and emotional growth of each and every student. Their passion is contagious, fostering a love of learning and a supportive environment where all children can thrive.

Thank you to our wonderful PTA for partnering with us and arranging many special treats throughout the week from breakfast, a nacho bar, snacks and so much more!

This week we also kicked off SOL testing, we want to commend our students on their hard work. As we continue to have SOL testing scheduled in the coming weeks, please check the schedule, and encourage students to get a good night's sleep before each test day, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive to school on time.

We hope our Cubbies can join us for the next Principal’s Walking Club on Friday at 8:05am!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Chronic Absenteeism - State Board SOA Decision

Last school year, the Virginia Board of Education decided to not suspend chronic absenteeism as part of school accreditation determinations. The Board’s rationale was a desire to send a strong message to schools, families, and students about the importance of regular attendance for student success. The Board decision means that schools with Level 3 (red) in any indicator—including chronic absenteeism—based on end-of-year data will receive “Accredited with Conditions” designation.

Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10%.

As of May 9, Cub Run's absenteeism rate has dropped to 10.7%. We appreciate your partnership. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can join our Westfield pyramid schools for having an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

REQUEST FOR PRE ARRANGED ABSENCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

FCPS Excused absences include the following reasons: illness, injury, funeral, legal obligations, medical procedures, religious observances, deployment-related absences, or family emergency.

If the reason for this prearranged absence is different from the above, please indicate the reason for the absence. Parents must plan to arrange for their child to complete make-up work, tests, or projects. If the student's planned absences exceed five school days, a parent conference may be required. The conference will include a review of the student's academic and absence record. Students who are absent 15 or more consecutive school days will be withdrawn from enrollment.

Cub Run Elementary School is committed to providing our students with a high quality education.  Academic success relies upon excellent school attendance.  Children who come to school on time every day are building critical life skills they will use throughout the rest of their lives.  Like strengthening a muscle, building positive attendance habits early on make a difference for our children today and for our adults of tomorrow.  Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves.  Cub Run is teaming up with the other 9 schools in the Westfield Pyramid in an effort to make sure all of our students are in school, on time, each day.

Did you know?

  • Regular school attendance in grades preschool through grade 6 makes it more likely that your child will read on grade level.
  • The 2024-25 school year calendar has been published and we highly recommend scheduling vacations around the school year calendar.  We have pasted the link below for your convenience:

https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/2024-2025-standard-school-year-calendar.pdf

  • Even excused absences interfere with learning.
  • A pattern of absences (whether unexcused or excused) is one of the main reasons children have lower academic achievement.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Absences can mask deeper struggles. For example; absences may be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, he or she may be struggling with school work or peer relationships, or possibly facing a medical or mental health concern.

Support is available:

All staff members at Cub Run ES are committed to supporting attendance. Additional resources can be found online at http://www.fcps.edu/attendance. We know that parents are the experts on their own child and our school team is here to partner and help solve attendance-related concerns.  The school counselors, school social worker, and psychologist are available:

Kristen Buesing, school counselor, [email protected]

Shannon Barry, school counselor, [email protected]

Courtney Marques, social worker, [email protected]

Denise Wilson, psychologist, [email protected]

News & Updates  Chronic Absenteeism - State Board SOA Decision

As of April 10th, Cub Run is ranked 2.1% away from our chronic absenteeism rate being in the yellow with a school percentage of 12.9%.  As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can join our Westfield pyramid schools for having an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact the principal or your child’s teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Cub Run News Cubby Corner

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

Our Cubbies have had another exciting week filled with learning and fun! Last Friday, we had our fantastic first edition of the Principal's Walking Club! It was wonderful to see so many students and staff join us for a morning walk and chat. It's a great way to start the day with some energizing exercise and positive conversations.

Speaking of energy, what a Friday night we had! The annual volleyball games against Virginia Run were awesome! We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all the families  and staff who came out to cheer us on. Our sixth-grade volleyball team and our incredible cheerleaders did a phenomenal job representing Cub Run with both talent and spirit!

This week showcased the amazing things happening here at Cub Run. From engaging classroom activities to our kick-off of spring PTA after school events that foster school spirit, we continue to provide a well-rounded educational experience for our students.

Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming end of year events, and as always, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. We hope to see many of you at our PTA meeting next Tuesday!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A solar eclipse is happening on Monday, April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please join us in reminding your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. We will be sharing reminders on our morning news and an announcement prior to dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

We are writing to express our gratitude for your incredible partnership as we continue to provide exceptional learning opportunities for our Cubbies throughout the school day and after school. We are grateful to everyone who participated in our science fair, from our brilliant young scientists and their dedicated families to the teachers who provided guidance and support. The energy and enthusiasm throughout the event were truly inspiring. To those who came out to see our students showcase their amazing projects, thank you for your presence! Your support means the world to our budding researchers.

We are excited to “PAWS and Read” on Friday as we celebrate Read Across America this month. Our Cubbies can bring a stuffed animal “reading buddy” to school on Friday with their favorite book as we take time to PAWS everything and read.

Looking ahead, we'd love for more parents to join us for the next PTA meeting on March 19th at 7:00PM either in the library or virtually. It's a fantastic opportunity to stay informed about upcoming events, offer your ideas, and connect with other members of our school community. You are also invited to a Dessert Meet & Greet before the PTA meeting on Tuesday from 6:00-7:00PM as I continue to meet parents and get to know our Cub Run community. Come chat with me, ask questions, share your thoughts about Cub Run, and enjoy a dessert. We hope to see you there!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning.

Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

Browse Summer Camps and Learning Programs

Have you made summer plans for your child yet? Are you looking for a camp for your child with special needs?

The Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

Fifth graders from Mrs. Dent's class enjoying lunch bunch with Mrs. Miller!

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

It has been another excellent week filled with meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for our Cubbies to collaborate with one another. While visiting classrooms, students have been proud to show what they are working on and continue to share what they love about Cub Run!

Tomorrow, our school will be buzzing with creativity and innovation as students showcase their incredible projects during our science fair. Our Cubbies will be able to embark on a scientific adventure as they explore the diverse projects on display. We hope to spark their curiosity and that they will be inspired by the scientific ingenuity of their peers. So, embrace the excitement, celebrate the spirit of exploration, and come join us at our science fair on Thursday evening from 6:00-7:00pm.

The first full day of Ramadan is on Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. Our library will be available during all lunches if students would prefer to go to the library instead of the cafeteria, as many will be fasting. Please remember that throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, we encourage you to reach out directly to us and your child's teacher regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Cubbies having fun and learning!

Daylight Saving Time Begins

Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., when daylight saving time begins!

First full day of Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is a religious and cultural observance day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances during the school year. There is school on observance days, however, tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be scheduled. See the school year calendar.

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Our incredible school social worker is Ms. Courtney Marques. She has a tremendous impact on our school community as she supports our students, families, and staff. We are extremely grateful for the ways that she goes above and beyond to help, build relationships, and provide needed resources to support our Cubbies. Please join us in expressing our gratitude for all that Ms. Marques does to connect and communicate with our school community. Thank you, Ms. Marques!

A Message from Mrs. Miller

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

As I settle into my second week at Cub Run, I'm struck by the incredible energy and enthusiasm of our students, staff, and entire school community. It's truly an inspiring place to be. It was outstanding to meet many families during our military family event and ice skating event last weekend. Thank you to our PTA and volunteers for their planning and organization of these excellent events!

I am enjoying my time getting to know our Cubbies during my lunch bunches with classes. Our students are sharing about themselves, what they love about Cub Run, and ideas on how to improve our school. I always get the best ideas from our students!

I hope you are able to join the Sully District Budget Town Hall on Thursday featuring Sully District School Board member Seema Dixit and Supervisor Kathy Smith. Please see below for additional information.

As your new principal, I want to express my deepest appreciation to you, the wonderful families of Cub Run, for entrusting your children to us. It's a responsibility I take incredibly seriously, and I'm dedicated to fostering a warm and supportive environment where every child can thrive. Building strong partnerships with families is essential to our success. I encourage you to stay involved in your child's education by attending upcoming events, volunteering your time, and maintaining open communication with our teachers, staff, and administration.

Thank you once again for your warm welcome and support. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to partnering with you. Together, we belong!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller

Message from Mrs. Miller

Dear Cub Run Elementary School Community,

I am thrilled to begin my first week at Cub Run and to be joining this extraordinary school community! It is an honor to serve as your new principal and become part of such a dedicated community.

I want to thank Ms.Teresa Fennessy for her outstanding contributions while she was our interim principal. I also want to thank Ms.Nausheen Haider for her exceptional leadership during this time of transition. I am thankful for their excellent communication and collaboration since my announcement and during this transition.

My experiences in Fairfax County Public Schools began as a student at Centreville High School and I am now in my nineteenth year serving as an educator in Fairfax County. I began as a substitute teacher and then school counselor at McNair Elementary School. I had the privilege to serve both the McNair Elementary and Deer Park Elementary School communities as assistant principal. For the last four years, I was very proud to serve as the principal at Olde Creek Elementary School.

As I embark on this new journey, I want to share with you my initial priorities as your principal:

Listening: My first and foremost objective is to listen – to students, teachers, parents, and staff. I want to understand your hopes, concerns, and aspirations for our school. I'm eager to learn about the unique culture and traditions that make Cub Run special. I believe true understanding will help me make informed decisions that benefit the entire community.

Building Relationships: Strong partnerships are crucial for student success. I'm committed to building positive relationships with each and every one of you, fostering collaboration and mutual respect.

Communication & Collaboration: Open communication and teamwork are key to a thriving school environment. I want to work together to build a caring culture where everyone feels valued, safe, and supported. I believe transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration are essential for creating a learning environment where every child has access to high quality instruction.

I was excited to kick off my first week joining our PTA meeting on Tuesday evening. It was wonderful to meet those of you who were able to attend in-person or virtually. In the coming weeks, I look forward to meeting more of you. I am eager to learn about your experiences, aspirations, and what makes our school so special. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or simply want to introduce yourself. I hope to see many of you at our military family event on Friday and ice skating on Saturday! Together, we belong!

My best,

Melissa Miller

Eating Disorder Parent Information

The Code of Virginia, 22.1-273.2 requires Virginia Public Schools to provide, on an annual basis, parent educational information regarding eating disorders for students in grades five through twelve.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. This information may be found at Eating Disorders

In third grade, students learned about the Ancient Egyptian mummying process by "mummifying" apples in class!

February 5-9 is National School Counseling Week, and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic, social/emotional success and college/career planning. We are thankful for Mrs. Buesing and Ms. Barry and all they do for our Cubbies!

Kindness Week 2024!

Kindness Week is Feb 12-16 in the Westfield Pyramid! To highlight ways that we can show kindness to others, we will have a spirit week with a different theme each day. Over the last few weeks, our Cub Run counselors have been delivering lessons on kindness in all classrooms. They have also organized multiple projects and displays around the school! Check some out below!

SEL Screener

The spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 between Feb 26-Mar 15. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:

https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener

If you have any questions please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Kristen Buesing, at [email protected].

Dismissal Announcement for Families of Walkers

If your child is registered as a walker, but you drive them home from school after meeting at the walker dismissal door, please remember to park your car off campus and walk to your car with your child(ren).

We have had an increased number of walkers crossing through our kiss 'n ride line this year, as well as cars entering into the parking lot close to dismissal time and driving opposite traffic to park. These instances are creating unsafe situations, both for our pedestrians as well as for other drivers who may be trying to leave the parking lot at that time.

Thank you for helping us keep school dismissal safe for everyone!

Attendance Matters!

When students miss too many days of school, they fall behind and struggle to keep up with their classmates. Whether the days missed are due to illness, truancy or for any other reason, the end result for the student is the same — learning time is lost. Children and adolescents will get sick at times and may need to stay at home, but we want to work with you to help minimize the number of days your student is absent from school.
